Do You Do Any Speaking to Industry Groups or
Associations?
If not, you should. Speaking to groups of people in
your target market is a great way to showcase your expertise
and get more business. It’s also a great way to
build your mailing list. Building your list should be
a top goal of all your marketing efforts. Once people
are on your list you will be able to get in front of
them again and again, while providing them with value
and useful information on your topic.
Read on for tips on how to easily collect your prospects'
contact information!

BUILD YOUR MAILING LIST THROUGH SPEAKING
Speaking is one of the most effective ways for potential
clients to experience you. When you speak, you are seen
as a knowledgeable expert who can help them solve their
problems and achieve a specific result or benefit.
Because the people who hear you speak may not yet need
your services, having them sign up to receive your newsletter
or ezine allows you to build a relationship with them.
Over time, your subscribers may become clients or referrers
of clients!
Here are a few tips on how to easily build your mailing
list while speaking:
Have a Signup Sheet.
Place a clipboard with your newsletter sign up sheet
by the registration table so people can sign up as they
enter the room. Then, during your presentation, mention
your great newsletter and what it will do to help them
with their needs, and circulate the clipboard during
your presentation to gather additional names and contact
info.
Place a catchy headline at the top of the sign up sheet
and a short description of your newsletter/ezine. You’ll
be amazed at how many people will sign up as the sheet
is passed from person to person.
Presentation Follow Up.
Another way to get audience members’ contact info
is to offer to send additional material on point with
the presentation to those who are interested. They simply
need to give you their cards and you will send them
the report, article, or whatever. Casually add that
they will also receive a complimentary subscription
to your newsletter.
Have a Drawing.
During or after your presentation, have a complimentary
drawing. You could give away a book you authored or
an audio CD product you created that is related to the
subject upon which you are speaking. Or, if you don’t
have a product to give away, you could draw for a bottle
of wine or basket of goodies or dinner for two. People
will usually be delighted to put their business card
in a basket if there is a chance to win something.
Be sure to mention to the audience that putting their
business cards in the bowl will not only allow them
to participate in the drawing, it will enable them to
receive a subscription to your complimentary newsletter.
The newsletter that provides useful information regarding
investing in the stock market, or keeps them abreast
of constant changes in employment law, or whatever it
is that your newsletter does!
Remember, people you meet in person will be your MOST
valuable subscribers, because they've already met you.
And we're all more likely to buy from others whom we
know, like, and trust.
